Nvidia Lays Out Bold Strategy at CES

Nvidia offered a bold new strategy at this week’s International CES in Las Vegas. The company, which has been a leader in hardware graphics technology for decades, recently has expanded into the realms of artificial intelligence, deep learning and automotive tech.

Graphical support and video delivery will however remain a key component of the company’s strategy, according to Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. Nvidia’s GeForce NOW Service will expand to millions more PCs and Macs, he announced in his keynote address at CES.

Huang also launched a new version of Shield — Nvidia’s streamer technology. Shield is at the very center of Nvidia’s home AI strategy. It is the first third-party Android TV device to feature support for the hands-free Google Assistant, Huang said. nike air max norge The open platform Shield will support 4K HDR casting via Nvidia GameStream, and allow gamers to access on-demand PC games, including Ubisoft’s catalog of AAA titles, as well as the vast library of new Android games. Shield, which is optimized for TV, allows users to control various smart-enabled devices via voice commands. It is designed to learn and adapt to the user’s lifestyle. Shield already allowed conversational searches. It now can respond to users’ voice requests to turn on or turn off lights, change TV channels, adjust the thermostat, and even call for an Uber.

Nvidia on the Road

The other half of Nvidia’s new wide-reaching technology strategy is built around BB8, the company’s in-development self-driving car, which is outfitted with the Drive PX 2 AI self-driving computer. In a demo video, it negotiates stop lights, stop signs and intersections, and even makes its way to the freeway before handing control back to the human in the driver’s seat.

BB8 runs on Nvidia’s DriveWorks software, which was developed over the past 18 months to run on its PilotNet deep neural network. It allows the car to drive safely in complex and dynamic environments.

The AI Co-Pilot software uses natural speech recognition to pick up spoken commands, while face recognition technology allows the vehicle to set personal preferences. Nvidia isn’t hitting the road alone. Cheap Fjallraven Kanken No.2 It is working with mapping companies Here and Zenrin, Huang noted, as well as two of the world’s leading automotive supplies, ZF and Bosch. Audi’s showcase vehicle also runs with an Nvidia car computer.

Different Strategies

Nvidia’s moves into automotive, gaming and home tech may seem unconnected — but such an expansion strategy is not unprecedented. nike air max 2017 dames Rood Nike Air Max 1 Heren groen Many tech companies have ventured beyond their respective core businesses. Google is no longer just a search engine company, for example, and Samsung did not start out as a TV and smartphone maker. Nike Air Max 2016 Heren zwart It actually began as a trading company and was focused on food processing and textiles before entering the electronics industry in the 1960s. Nike Air Max Pas Cher “Essentially, Nvidia is looking at diversifying and moving away from pure computing and gaming hardware,” said Scott Steinberg, principal analyst at TechSavvy Global. “They are expanding to other areas of the tech world as tech permeates more parts of our daily world,” he told TechNewsWorld. nike kd 9 pas cher Kanken No.2 Nvidia’s growth is a logical extension of a core strength, observed Roger Entner, principal analyst at Recon Analytics. “It is their key competency in display technology that is allowing them to extend to different markets,” he told TechNewsWorld. Goedkoop Nike Air Max “That is the one thing that links this together but also differentiates them from a Samsung, which makes so many different things.”

Bold Move

However, the fact that Nvidia is developing AI is a bit of a departure for a company that was known primarily for graphics. “Nvidia has been bolder than, say, AMD in branching into new businesses,” said Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates. “Jen-Hsun Huang has a great degree of confidence in himself and his company, and therefore is willing to take risks others might not,” Kay told TechNewsWorld. Those risks limited, though, suggested TechSavvy’s Steinberg. “This is just a case where the company has identified some of the biggest markets and is expanding in those directions,” he suggested. nike air max 1 pas cher “Tech companies need to move with the market, and the market now moves at light speed,” Steinberg observed. “Many companies now expand into areas we may not be aware of, so it is natural that Nvidia is expanding their reach.”

A Stretch Too Far

The question is whether Nvidia can be taken seriously as both a gaming hardware and automotive technology maker. As Apple, Microsoft and Google have shown, it is possible to move in multiple directions successfully. Whether Nvidia can be as successful as those other tech giants is the question. “Gaming is, of course, a strength for both Nvidia and AMD — but automotive is a pretty big stretch, as is TV,” said Kay. “There’s no doubt that graphics engines and ARM cores will find their way into many new areas, including those — as well as robots, AI, VR and cloud computing,” he said. Nike Air Max 2017 Dames wit “Nvidia is positioned to address these opportunities primarily through partners, who would use Nvidia engines in their environments,” noted Kay. “In other words, Nvidia won’t become a car company, but it will sell chips to car companies.

Deutsche Telekom Launches’s New Dial Smartwatch

Deutsche Telekom Launches's New Dial Smartwatch

Deutsche Telekom is launching a new voice-activated smartwatch from US performer and producer in Germany and some other European countries later this year, they said on Monday.

The deal for the device called “dial” was announced in Barcelona during the annual Mobile World Congress.

The gadget is’s second move into the smartwatch market after the celebrity launched “puls” more than a year ago.

Unlike most so-called wearables such as the Apple Watch, “dial” has its own SIM card so it can operate independently from another smartphone or tablet, for making phone calls or connecting to the internet.

The front man of the Black Eyed Peas launched “dial” through his technology start-up and is tapping into a growing market for smart devices people can wear rather than carry.

Shipments of wearables are expected to grow from 84 million units in 2015 to 411 million in 2020, according to technology research firm CCS Insight. The global market will be worth $34 billion in 2020, up from $10 billion in 2015, they said.’s new device is voice controlled and can play music and surf the internet simultaneously. The operating system software can recognise and store personal preferences.

The smartwatch runs on a dedicated platform called AneedA, which includes a music streaming service, and also works as a voice assistant similar to Apple Inc’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana. told a news conference he wanted to add more devices to the AneedA platform, but declined to elaborate.

The smartwatch was launched in Britain last week with operator Three.

Deutsche Telekom said “dial” would be available later this year in its European markets but declined to give more details.

Surface Pro 4, Surface Book Get Firmware Updates; Users Complain They're Buggy

Microsoft has released its first firmware updates of the year for the Surface Book and the Surface Pro 4computing devices. The updates aim to deliver a range of improvements, though if you were hoping fixes for battery drain and wake-up issues, your wait isn’t over just yet.

The Redmond giant on Thursday released January 2016 firmware updates for both its new Surfacedevices. The company notes that the updates will offer thermal tuning, wireless access point compatibility, and better support for 5GHz Wi-Fi network.

Additional improvements include enhanced keyboard detection and stability patches for Nvidiagraphics cards. The description of the update confirms that Microsoft hasn’t yet patched the battery drain and sleeping issues in the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book, and that should upset many users.

Last month, Microsoft acknowledged an issue with the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book that waspreventing the devices from going to standby mode properly – this as you can imagine, also took a toll on the battery.

This is apparently happening because of issues in the Intel Skylake chipsets. Microsoft last month noted that it would release a fix for the aforementioned issues “sometime soon in the new year.” Now, it appears affected users would have to wait for a few more weeks.

If that wasn’t disappointing enough, the updates as per user complaints and are also causing driver issues. Oddly enough, the update has also made it harder to detach the Surface Book screen at all. Some users also note that after the update, their Surface device has stopped recognising the Surface Pen.

The Sweat of Your Brow: The Future of Health Monitors?

The Sweat of Your Brow: The Future of Health Monitors?

Wristbands which track the number of steps you take, how many calories you burn and how fast your heart beats have become so popular they are now part of many a smartphone contract.

But what they cannot do is measure health at the molecular level, meaning what is happening inside the body.

Now a device developed by researchers and engineers from the universities of California in Berkeley and Stanford promises to do just that, by analysing your sweat.

The wearable “smart headband” or “smart wristband” is made of flexible sensors and microprocessors that stick to the skin.

It analyses chemicals in sweat, including levels of sodium, glucose, potassium, lactate, as well as skin temperature – indicators of muscle fatigue, dehydration or dangerously high body temperature.

The data is relayed in real-time to a smartphone app.

“Human sweat contains physiologically rich information, thus making it an attractive body fluid for non-invasive wearable sensors,” said Ali Javey, a University of California professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences.

He was the lead author of a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Sweat is already used to diagnose certain diseases or detect drug use, but needs to be collected and sent off for analysis in a lab.

Real-time, continuous analysis has proven difficult due to a lack of flexible, lightweight and wearable electronic monitors.

The new device combines all these features, and may also open up other avenues, the study authors said.

“With this noninvasive technology, someday it may be possible to know what’s going on physiologically without needle sticks or attaching little, disposable cups on you,” said co-author George Brooks, an exercise physiologist.

Jason Heikenfeld, a computing and electrical engineering expert from the University of Cincinnati who did not take part in the study, said this was “a real leap forward for wearable devices.”

The gadget “might one day be used to monitor the amount of active drug in a patient’s blood – helping to avoid rises and falls in drug levels between doses,” he wrote in a comment carried by Nature.

Google Says Shipped 5 Million Cardboard VR Headsets Since Launch

Alphabet Inc’s Google said it had shipped 5 million units of the Google Cardboard viewer, a wearable device that allows users to experience virtual reality through mobile apps.

The company, which launched the Cardboard viewer a year and a half earlier, said on Wednesday that there had been 25 million downloads of Cardboard apps from its Google Play app store.

Google has been exploring virtual reality for a while but the company dived into the concept this month by setting up a new division for virtual reality computing.

Oculus, the virtual reality company Facebook bought in 2014, started accepting pre-orders this month for its much-awaited headset, Rift, which will ship in first quarter.

Google said in November that its video-sharing site, YouTube, supported virtual reality videos.

Viewers can watch virtual reality videos using a mobile device and the Google Cardboard viewer.

Google said more than 350,000 hours of YouTube videos had been watched in virtual reality.
